Your engagement ring is going to be one of the most important pieces of jewellery you ever own. You’re going to be wearing it everyday for the rest of your life, so you need to make sure that the ring you choose goes well with your style.

Choose The Metal
Look at the jewelry you already wear the most and see if you favor a particular metal. If you own a lot of white gold, for example, then choosing a white gold ring could be a good idea. 

You can also use your skin tone as a guide to choose a metal that will look best on you. If you skin is warm toned, you’ll look good in warmer metal tones like rose or yellow cold. Cool skin tones will look good against white gold and platinum. To determine your skin tone, look at your skin in natural light and find a spot where your veins are visible. Your wrists are usually a good point for this. If you veins look blue or purple, your skin tone is cool. If your veins look green, you’re probably a warm. 

Choose The Stone
Engagement rings don’t have to be diamond, although this is still the most common option. If you do choose a classic diamond, you need to make sure you’re buying good quality. Look for the four C’s; color, carat, clarity and cut. Make sure your ring comes with proper certification so you know you’re buying a quality piece. 

If you don’t fancy a diamond, there are other options. Sapphires, emeralds and rubies are all becoming more popular options for engagement rings. Just be aware that these gemstones, while beautiful, are softer than diamonds, meaning they are more easily scratched. Make sure you know how to clean and care for them safely, so you don’t accidentally damage your ring. 

Know How To Take Care Of It
With how much you’ll spend on your engagement ring - and the sentiment attached to it - you’ll need to take care of it. You’ll want to make sure it lasts as long as your love does, after all. You’ll have to know how to take care of your engagement ring to do this. Thankfully, it’s relatively simple and only needs a bit of basic maintenance and TLC. While it could depend on the materials the ring is made out of, it should be relatively simple. It’s worth speaking with the jeweler you got the ring from to make sure you know how to do this properly.

If you don’t take care of it, you might need to replace it, which you’ll likely want to avoid.

Choose The Style
If you want your ring to suit you, think about your overall style and how you can make the ring the most you. 

If your style is very classic, choose a classic diamond ring in a simple shape with a cut like round or princess. If you often dress in a vintage style, then why not look into buying a vintage ring, or  a new ring in an emerald cut? Emerald cut is a very vintage looking cut, and was popular in the past for engagement rings. For a quirkier style, you could look at a more unusual cut, like the pear (famously worn by Elizabeth Taylor), or an alternative stone, like a sapphire. 

The setting of the ring will also match your style if you choose wisely. If you don’t wear much jewelry, then a simple ring with just the main stone will look beautiful. If you like bigger, more chunky jewelry, look at rings with larger settings with some smaller stones around the main one. A band with more stones in will also suit a wearer who loves some sparkle.
