You’ve got the ring and let’s face it, as soon as they popped the question your mind was already working out your venue, flowers and of course…the dress. But the pair of you are as unique together as you are individually and the thought of having a wedding that’s just like everyone else’s really doesn’t appeal. So how can you add a few quirks and touches that make your special day stand out and stay true to your values and your relationship? First of all, you might think about the venue. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a traditional church or chapel but these days there are also many more options, particularly if you don’t practice a faith and would feel uncomfortable with a religious ceremony. Check out museums, stately homes and other places of interest.
If you’re hoping to keep the cost down, you might also find it possible to hold a Friday ceremony rather that at the weekend and this too will give you more scope for adding the extras that will reflect your style. What do we mean by extras? Well take a look at any wedding site and you’ll be inundated with ideas. These might include some fun wedding stationery, including save the date cards, invitations, order of service and place names. Picking a fun theme and designing everything else around it can really set the tone for the day and let guests know what to expect. You might want more unusual wedding favors on the table including hangover kits for the adults, filled with goodies and special game and sweet-filled treats for any children you invite along. Holding a little money back will also allow you to buy heartfelt gifts for your bridesmaids and groomsmen and of course the flower girls. If you’re not a fan of the heat then how about a winter wedding? Imagine walking down the aisle on a bright, frosty winter morning in a beautifully made winter gown, far more unique than all the wedding dresses you tried on for a spring affair. A stunning winter gown, beautiful winter themed flowers and table decorations and a roaring fire at your venue and you’ve got all the trappings of a truly special day. If this all sounds far too traditional to you then it’s time to have a good look at alternative celebrations. There are no rules about how you run your wedding day, only that you do it your way and have the best time. Moving away from a hotel or hall you might want to consider a grand marquee in a field. The cover will provide shelter in the event of any bad weather but you might also plan to hold a giant hog roast outside, building campfires, playing games and dancing to live music, long into the night. Relaxed, bohemian and the party to end all parties. If the idea of holding your celebrations in your same town doesn’t appeal then you might also consider a destination wedding. Although likely to be much smaller, you’ll be able to gather your nearest and dearest and jet off to a beautiful location of your choice and combine wedding, honeymoon and family holiday all in one fell swoop. Often, if you choose a company to organize and plan your special day for you, you’ll hardly need to lift a finger and can instead concentrate on just getting your outfits right. The only real logistics you’ll have to figure out are the costs of the whole event and if you plan on paying for everyone or asking them to chip in towards the cost. Couples often say that planning a wedding is one of the biggest logistical challenges that they have to face in their married lives. From making sure warring relatives are kept apart to deciding on shape, style and flavor of cake; the whole thing can become wearing quite quickly. But when you’ve decided to take matters into your own hands and do things exactly how you both want them, you’ll soon discover that planning can be a great shared activity to do together. Plan your quirky stationery, pose for save the date cards, bring your personalities to a day of celebrating your commitment to each other. From venue, to table decorations, wedding gowns to honeymoon spend some time planning and carrying out some in-depth research online and shopping around. When the dust has settled and the day is done you’ll be able to sit back and reflect on the best day of your life, done your way. Memories to treasure forever.
